Embekka Devalaya

Embekka Devalaya is one of Sri Lanka’s finest examples of traditional wood craftsmanship and architecture. Built during the Gampola Kingdom by King Vikramabahu III (AD 1357–1374), the shrine is dedicated to Kataragama Deviyo and the local deity Devatha Bandara.

The temple consists of three sections: the Sanctum, the Digge (Dancing Hall), and the famous Hevisi Mandapaya (Drummers’ Hall). The Drummers’ Hall is renowned for its beautifully carved wooden pillars and distinctive roof structure.

The carvings are among the best examples of Sinhalese artistry, featuring entwined swans, double-headed eagles, dancers, wrestlers, horsemen, floral motifs, and mythical creatures. The temple contains more than 500 unique decorative designs, highlighting the remarkable skills of ancient craftsmen.

A unique feature of the temple is the “Madol Kurupawa,” an ingenious wooden locking mechanism used to support the roof. Historical records suggest that some timber used in the hall came from a former royal audience hall in Gampola.

Blending Sinhalese and South Indian architectural influences, Embekka Devalaya remains an important cultural and historical landmark, offering visitors a fascinating insight into Sri Lanka’s rich heritage and craftsmanship.
