Overview
Embekka Devalaya (Embekka Temple)
Overview:
Embekka Devalaya, located in Sri Lanka, was built during the Gampola Era (AD 1357–1374) by King Vikramabahu III. The temple is dedicated to Kataragama deviyo, with a local deity called Devatha Bandara also worshiped here.
Structure:
The temple consists of three main sections:
- Sanctum of Garagha – the main shrine.
- Digge (Dancing Hall) – used for traditional dances.
- Hevisi Mandapaya (Drummers' Hall) – famous for its elaborate wood carvings and high-pitched roof.
Carvings and Woodwork:
- Much of the wood used in the Drummers’ Hall is believed to have come from an abandoned Royal Audience Hall at Gampola.
- The wooden pillars and entrance porch (Vahalkada) showcase exceptional Sinhalese craftsmanship.
- Pillar bases are octagonal, while the tops (Pekada) feature four-leaf square designs.
- .
- The roof rafters are joined with a unique Madol Kurupawa (giant catch pin), a feature not found elsewhere.
- Overall, the temple contains 514 unique designs, including 125 series of decorations, 256 liyawela designs, 64 lotus patterns, and 30 decorative motifs.
History and Architecture:
- Historical records indicate that King Bhuvanekabahu IV (reigned 1341–1351 A.D.) commissioned the temple, entrusting construction to his Chief Minister, Senalankadhikara.
- The architectural design was created by Sathapati Rayar, a South Indian architect, who brought Tamil Pandya sculptors from Tamil Nadu, blending Hindu, Dravidian, and Indo-Chinese styles with influences from the Polonnaruwa era.
Significance:
Embekka Devalaya is celebrated not only for its religious importance but also as one of the finest examples of medieval Sinhalese woodcraft and temple architecture.
