Pinnawala Elephant Sanctuary Day Trip from Kandy

Overview
The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is a renowned captive breeding and conservation center for wild Asian elephants, located in the village of Pinnawala, about 13 km northeast of Kegalle in the Sabaragamuwa Province. It is home to the largest herd of captive elephants in the world, with 71 elephants recorded in 2023, including 30 males and 41 females spanning three generations.
Established in 1975 by the Department of Wildlife Conservation, the orphanage was created to care for and protect orphaned and injured elephant calves found in the wild. Over the years, it has grown into one of Sri Lanka’s most important wildlife conservation and educational sites.
A remarkable milestone occurred on 31 August 2021, when a 25-year-old elephant named Surangi gave birth to twin male calves. This was a historic event, marking the first recorded birth of elephant twins in Sri Lanka in 80 years, since 1941.
