Brief Garden: Bevis Bawa’s Iconic Tropical Art Estate

In 1929, Bevis Bawa inherited the family rubber plantation from his mother, Bertha Marianne née Schrader. The estate’s name “Brief Garden” originates from the fact that it was originally purchased by his father, Benjamin, using earnings from a successful legal brief. Realizing he was not suited to managing a plantation, Bawa transformed the land into a creative garden sanctuary.

Originally spanning around 81 hectares (200 acres), the estate was gradually reduced in size as portions were sold to make it more manageable. Despite this, Bawa continued to develop and refine the garden throughout his life until his passing in 1992. Today, the property is maintained under private care, preserving his artistic legacy.

The entrance to Brief Garden is marked by ornate gateposts featuring male and female figures, created by Bevis Bawa along with Australian artist Donald Friend. These striking sculptures represent a fusion of Eastern and Western artistic influences. From here, pathways lead to different sections of the estate, including a distinctive black-and-white doorway set in a mustard-yellow wall that leads toward the house via a curved staircase. Another path descends into the garden itself, carefully designed to reveal hidden views while preserving the sense of discovery throughout the landscape.
